Employers Initiative on Domestic Abuse

Did you know that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, ranging from coercive control to murder? Also in 2016/17, 1.9 million people were affected by domestic abuse in the UK.

Early in October, some of the CiC team attended the Employers Initiative on Domestic Abuse conference, hosted by BBC journalist Kate Silverton, which saw a diverse range of speakers and panel guests join exhibitors, members and supporters at the BBC Radio Theatre. Speakers included:

“¢ BBC Drama Team, EastEnders
“¢ Dame Carol Black, Adviser to NHSI & PHE on Health & Work
“¢ Paul Farmer, Chief Executive, Mind
“¢ Baroness Helena Kennedy QC, Director of the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute
“¢ Patrick Ryan, Chief Executive, Hestia

With domestic abuse being high on political and news agendas, it felt like the perfect time to have such an important conference.

The main focus of the day was what employers could do to ensure the safety and mental health of employees experiencing domestic abuse is being looked after. They also covered the new Domestic Abuse bill, the impact this will have and the importance of this. At the very least, the conference was to raise awareness and support those affected and to provide support and education to help perpetrators stop.
