Strength coach, Leah Dunthorne, shares why movement is women's true superpower in midlife.
Midlife can be a tricky time – One moment you’re powering through your day as if nothing can stop you, and the next you’re feeling off-kilter, anxious, or wondering why your back is aching today? If you’ve ever felt as though your body and mind are out of sync, you’re not on your own. Women’s midlife brings incredible opportunities as well as some very real physical challenges.
The truth? Strength and movement aren’t just about muscles or aesthetics (though this can be a nice side effect!). They’re about reclaiming control, confidence, and energy at a stage of life that can feel unpredictable. It’s about developing awareness, moving with intention, building resilience, and reminding yourself that you are capable of more than you might think.
Despite what the glossy adverts say, there are biological realities to ageing that as women we need to understand. Bone density and muscle mass naturally begin to decline from our thirties. During menopause, oestrogen levels fall sharply – on average women lose 2–3% of bone mass each year, and 3–8% of muscle mass with each post-menopausal decade. We also see subtle changes in our balance, coordination, mobility and agility.
The good news? These changes are not inevitable, nor irreversible. Regular strength-focused training helps protect bone density and muscle mass, supports healthy joints, improves posture, and gives you the confidence to keep doing the things you love.
Taking some time out to move, no matter how brief can have a real ripple effect on our energy, mood and even sleep. It’s an opportunity for you to take some time just for you, reconnect with your body and rediscover the joy in movement.
Exploring our mobility and movement and challenging balance and coordination in fun and dynamic ways can also be a great for keeping your brain and body agile, learning new movements improves our cognitive function and neuroplasticity and helps you to respond to real life challenges with greater ease and confidence.
