7 Tips on Avoiding the Post-Lunchtime Slump

It’s completely natural to feel tired in the afternoon but not everyone experiences it with equal intensity. Circadian rhythms, which affect our “sleep signals” peak during the afternoon causing some of us to feel sleepy. Other factors, such as what we eat, hydration levels, and how much time we spend staring at a screen can also cause fatigue.

Here are a few tips to fight the mid-afternoon slump, increase productivity in the workplace and improve employee engagement.


1. Take a Break

Take five minutes to do something besides working in order to give your body and mind a break.

2. Move Around

A change of scenery or getting some fresh air on your lunch break may boost productivity.

3. Step Back From the Screen

In order to avoid eyestrain or focusing fatigue keep about an arm’s length safe distance from the computer screen and look away from the computer at least every 20 minutes.

4. Have a Snack

If it’s not lunchtime yet – have a snack to help boost energy levels.

5. Eat a Smaller Lunch

Consider opting for a smaller lunch; choose something with more protein and less carbohydrates to combat drowsiness.

6. Stay Hydrated

In order to avoid dehydration and its sleepy side effects, try sipping on water or your favourite hot beverage.

7. Avoid Sugar

Consuming some sweets may provide a sugar-high that will only lead to a sugar crash, causing us to become even sleepier.

Finally, skipping breakfast may lead to an energy crash in the afternoon. Eating a healthy breakfast helps sustain energy throughout the day. Getting enough sleep is vital to staying energised throughout the day.
